HIJAB WALKING AROUND MOSCOW
Performance
2012
In the 'Hijab walking around Moscow' performance, the artist dares to ‘find out how it feels like to be a Muslim woman wearing a hijab in Moscow’. Through the simple external transformation – by getting into a black hijab – she is placing herself in the center of religious tensions, seeking reactions from people in all walks of life: from Macdonald’s and the Cathedral of Christ the Savior to the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts and the Strelka Bar. Identifying the artist as an outsider, the community wonders, ‘Are you sure, you’re in the right place? What do you want?’
